In order to dismiss doubts over the functioning of electronic voting machines (EVMs), the Election Commission on Wednesday threw an “open challenge,” inviting people to try and hack its EVMs.
The poll panel stated that the challenge will begin starting May 1 and it will be a four-level challenge where people from various political parties, experts and scientists can test the machines and try whether the machines can be tampered with.
The challenge will be open for 10 days and the proceedings will be video graphed.
The move by the poll panel comes after opposition parties urged it to revert to the paper ballot system raising doubts over infallibility of the machines.
Earlier today, a delegation of opposition parties led by Former Prime Minister Manmohan Singh and Congress President Sonia Gandhi met President Pranab Mukherjee and submitted a memorandum raising various issues, including the alleged tampering of EVMs.
“The recent cases of alleged tampering and malfunctioning of EVM machines, particularly in the recently concluded assembly elections, has raised bonafide concerns on the possibility of manipulating electoral outcomes,” the memorandum said.
Leaders across political parties have sought the use of ballot papers in place of EVMs, alleging the EVMs have been tampered with and the votes all go to only one party – the BJP.
The Election Commission has previously dismissed the allegations, stating that the EVMs cannot be tampered with and that the doubts raised by parties are unsubstantiated.
